Crime in Tokyo

There is no doubt that Tokyo, Japan is one of the most enchanting places in the world. It is very easy to see why so many people not only visit Tokyo for its many attractions, but choose to live in the true fantasy that is Tokyo. Located on Honshu, the main island of Japan, Tokyo lies tucked along the North Pacific Ocean and is the capital city of Japan. Tokyo also has the record for being the largest metropolitan city in the world. As humans, we typically pair large cities with high crime rates. Would you believe that crime in Tokyo has a rate lower than many other large cities in the world?

According to NUMBEO, walking alone at night is rated at 83.37 out of 100 and is considered to be very safe. Moscow, Russia, was rated 45.48 and only considered moderately safe to walk alone at night. The crime rate in Tokyo is so low, it is difficult to find a city with lower ratings.

Crimes such as burglary, being attacked, or drug use are worries for just about anyone that live in a city. NUMBEO gave Tokyo, Japan an overall level of crime rating of 15.41 out of 100 which is extremely low. Would you be able to guess the overall level of crime rating for Washington D.C.? The capital city of the United States received a crime rating of 70.38. Tokyo was rated an astonishing 40.81 points lower than the romance capital of the world, Paris, France.

While crime in Tokyo may be much lower than many other cities around the world, do remember that crimes still happen. The 2017 Crime and Safety Report given by OSAC warned that unreported crimes are likely to happen in a nightclub atmosphere. The report claimed that drinks may be spiked leaving the victim regaining consciousness sometimes in the bar or outside in the street. The report also warned that establishments have been known to charge obscene amounts on credit cards. OSAC noted that violent crimes are rare due to strict laws regarding dangerous weapons and firearms. In fact, carrying any type of pocket knife is illegal in Tokyo.

What more could you ask for in a city? Incredible sights and attractions in one of the safest atmospheres in the world is exactly what home should be. It is a wonder what the world would be like if every city were as enticing as Tokyo, Japan.
